SAILED COOP: WHO ARE WE?
We are a group of people who want to work together to enable and facilitate:
- DIRECT TRADE
- TRANSPORT BY SAILBOAT
- COOPERATION
between
- Producers looking to export cargo (e.g. cacao farmers, …).
- Consumers or artisans looking to import cargo (e.g. chocolate makers, …).
- Sailboats owners looking for cargo to transport.
With these goals, SAILED coop serves the interests of cargo exporters, cargo importers and sailboat owners interested to collaborate.
As an non-profit association, SAILED coop would work towards its members’ benefits. The expenses and workload of SAILED coop would be fairly shared between the different members, and SAILED coop would operate as no-profit entity. All actors would continue to communicate among each other: SAILED COOP would not take the place of any of its members as a middlemen, but it would only facilitate and allow common orders.
WHY SAILED COOP?
In a highly globalised and institutionally complex environment, small scale actors might struggle to do DIRECT TRADE, as it involves lots of logistics for a relatively small amount of cargo.
SAILED COOP would allow them to partner, while facilitating all the planning and logistics behind a DIRECT TRADE process.
- DIRECT TRADE means that producers can fully profit from the result of their work, without middlemen or Wall Street brokers in between.
- TRANSPORT BY SAIL means that we rely on wind and manpower to transport the cargo sustainably.
That is why we believe that DIRECT TRADE and TRANSPORT BY SAIL are fundamental components for a fairer and more sustainable world.
LET’S AIM FURTHER
Although the main focus of SAILED coop is the promotion of DIRECT TRADE and TRANSPORT BY SAIL, the cooperation between members could also result in much more, such as: sharing webshops and/or physical stores showcasing members’ productions, sharing accounts for services, sharing warehouse and equipments, organising events, etc…
HOW DOES SAILED COOP WORK?
All the members will have access to an easy-to-read database that they can edit with their specific needs, requests and suggestions.
This database will show:
- The availability of products (information provided by producers looking to export cargo)
- The needs/wishes for products (information provided by consumers or artisans looking to import cargo)
- The cargo space availability and planned voyages (information provided by sailboats owners looking for cargo to transport)
When a match is found, SAILED coop will organise the order and transport process.
For instance, through SAILED coop, a cacao producer in Mexico, several chocolate makers in Europe, and a sailboat owner with available cargo space could meet and organise a cocoa beans delivery.
DIRECT TRADE being one of the foundations of SAILED coop, particular attention is placed on transparency in the supply chain.
To do this, SAILED coop works directly with:
- raw material producers
- the owners of the sailboats transporting these raw materials
- consumers or processors of these raw materials
This in order to avoid middlemen and ensure that profits go directly to those who create value.
For these same reasons and an ethical model of COOPERATION, we refuse any exclusivity contract (logical continuation of the capitalist model).
